How to Make a Dark Kitchen Feel Brighter: 8 Design Tips from Our Designers.

25 Jun 2026

Many of the homes we work on are traditional properties full of character and original features. While these homes have plenty of charm, they often come with one common challenge: kitchens that feel dark, particularly in north-facing rooms or spaces with smaller windows.

The good news is that creating a lighter, brighter kitchen isn't simply about choosing white cabinetry. With thoughtful design decisions, carefully selected materials and a well-planned lighting scheme, it's possible to transform even the darkest kitchen into a space that feels bright, welcoming and enjoyable to spend time in.

Here are eight practical design tips we regularly recommend to our clients when looking to maximise light and create a brighter kitchen.

1. Choose a Light Floor.

We are seeing many black floor tiles being removed from our clients' homes and replaced with light stone flooring or light wood-effect LVT. Dark floors absorb light rather than reflect it, and because the floor is one of the largest visible surfaces in a room, it has a significant impact on how bright the space feels overall.

2. Opt for a Light, Polished Worktop.

Another large surface area within the kitchen is the worktop. Similar to dark flooring, dark worktops absorb light rather than reflect it. We recommend choosing a light-coloured quartz or granite worktop, ideally with a polished finish, as this will help bounce light around the room and enhance the sense of space.

3. Add a Mirror Splashback.

If your kitchen has limited natural light or a north-facing aspect, a mirror splashback can make a dramatic difference. Not only will it reflect and distribute the available light throughout the room, but it can also create a greater sense of depth, transforming a flat, uninspiring space without introducing additional colours or textures.

4. Choose Roller Blinds Instead of Roman Blinds.

Roller blinds are excellent for providing privacy while maximising natural light during the day, as they can be rolled completely clear of the window opening. If you prefer the softer look of Roman blinds, consider fitting them above and outside the window reveal so they fold up above the window, rather than covering part of the glass and reducing the amount of light entering the room.

5. Keep Dark Colours Below Eye Level.

If you would love a darker cabinetry colour but are concerned it may make the room feel too dark, consider using it only on the base units and island. Tall units, wall cabinetry and canopies can then be finished in a complementary lighter shade to keep the overall scheme feeling balanced and bright.

6. Build Your Cabinetry to the Ceiling.

Where possible, extend your cabinetry all the way to the ceiling. This creates a cleaner, more seamless appearance, draws the eye upwards and can make the room feel taller and more spacious. It also eliminates awkward gaps above cabinets, helping the space feel calmer and more considered.

7. Reconsider Your Lighting Scheme.

The type of lighting you choose, and where it is positioned, plays a vital role in how bright and usable your kitchen feels. We recommend layering different light sources, including ceiling spotlights, decorative pendants or wall lights, and under-cabinet or shelving strip lighting. Ideally, these should be switched separately so you can adjust the lighting to suit different times of day and activities.

8. Avoid Creating Shadows.

Lighting placement is just as important as the fixtures themselves. Position ceiling spotlights slightly in front of the person using the worktop so that the light falls onto the workspace rather than creating shadows.

When planning your kitchen layout, try to avoid positioning tall units or wall cabinets close to windows where they may obstruct natural light. If this isn't possible, under-cabinet lighting becomes particularly important for maintaining a bright and functional workspace.
