Five Design Decisions That Shape How A Space Works.

28 Apr 2026

We recently photographed a completed project in Itton - a kitchen, boot room and dressing space designed around everyday use and long-term living.

Rather than simply sharing images, we wanted to highlight a few of the decisions that quietly shape how the space works. These are the kinds of choices that don’t always stand out at first glance, but make a lasting difference to how a room feels day to day.

1. Use contrast to bring warmth into the space.

Darker cabinetry can feel calm and grounding, but it works best when balanced with texture. Here, off black painted cabinetry is paired with warm wood and a Corten-style finish to soften the overall look and avoid it feeling flat.

2. Let one element lead the design.

Every project benefits from a clear focal point. In this kitchen, the island sets the tone, with its textured finish drawing the eye and giving the rest of the palette direction. Keeping the surrounding elements more restrained allows that feature to hold the space.

3. Consider how cabinetry sits within the room.

Small construction details can have a big impact. A recessed plinth beneath the island creates a subtle floating effect, helping a large piece feel lighter and more architectural within the space.

4. Build storage around how you actually live.

Opposite the dining area, a built-in drinks cabinet brings together open shelving, wine storage and lighting. Positioned where it’s naturally used, it becomes part of the rhythm of the room rather than something tucked away.

5. Choose materials that support everyday use.

Work surfaces need to stand up to real life. The worktop used here is highly durable and heat resistant, allowing the kitchen to be used properly without the need for constant care or caution.

Every project we take on begins in the same place - understanding how you live, how you use your space, and what matters day to day. From there, we design and make something that fits. If you’re planning a project, you’re always welcome to visit the showroom or arrange a consultation.
